    United for Efficiency: Advocating for High-Efficiency Products in Support of a Global Climate Change Agreement
    The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Environment Facility’s (GEF) United for Efficiency (U4E) initiative and its lighting chapter, en.lighten, announced exciting new projects during Energy Day of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21). The partnership includes the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Copper Association (ICA), the environmental and energy‐efficiency NGO CLASP, and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The partnership also includes the private sector partners of ABB, Arçelik, BSH Hausgeräte GmbH, Electrolux, MABE, Osram, Philips, and Whirlpool Corporation.

    Anthony Lea Appointed President of the International Copper Association
    The International Copper Association (ICA) announces the appointment of Anthony Lea as its new president. Mr. Lea holds the senior management responsibility for all aspects of the organization, overseeing the global operations of the extended Copper Alliance across six continents.

    ICA Partnering with UN on United for Efficiency Initiative
    ICA is actively participating in a new UN initiative designed to accelerate global use of energy-efficient appliances. The first joint Project Steering Committee meeting of the en.lighten initiative and the new United for Efficiency, U4E, initiative was held on 15 May 2015 at the Global Environment Facility’s (GEF) headquarters in Washington D.C. Both initiatives serve as the accelerators on lighting (en.lighten) and appliances (U4E) for the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative of the UN Secretary-General.

    Copper Industry Demonstrates Commitment to Sustainable Development
    The International Copper Association (ICA) launches a communications campaign to demonstrate copper’s critical role in sustainable development. As evidence of the copper industry’s commitment to sustainable development, ICA is a founding partner of the Efficient Appliances and Equipment Global Partnership Program, a global public-private partnership focused on market transformations toward energy-efficient appliances and industrial equipment. The United Nations is closely involved in this program.

    Jean-Sébastien Jacques, Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Copper, Appointed Chairman of the ICA
    The ICA announces the appointment of Jean-Sébastien Jacques, Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Copper, as its new Chairman. Mr. Jacques will replace the outgoing Chairman Peter Beaven, Chief Financial Officer of BHP Billiton.

    New Global Alliance for UNEP: Energy-Efficient Appliances and Equipment Launched
    The International Copper Association is working with UNEP to reduce global energy demand, mitigate climate change and improve access to energy. A worldwide shift to energy-efficient appliances and equipment—including lighting, air conditioners, refrigerators, electric motors, ceiling fans and distribution transformers—would reduce global electricity consumption by more than 10 percent, saving $350 billion annually in electricity bills and reducing global carbon emissions by 1.25 billion tonnes per year.

    Development of Ultraconductive Copper Expands to China
    The International Copper Association (ICA) announces the signing of funding contracts with Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Dalian University of Technology to develop ultraconductive copper technology in China. To date, multi-year programs have only been under development in the U.S. and Europe. The programs in China will extend ultraconductive copper’s footprint into copper’s largest geographical market. -

    Copper-Alloy Net Pen Survives Chile Earthquake
    A copper-alloy mesh pen off the coast of Northern Chile survived a tsunami warning following an 8.2 earthquake in Chile’s Tarapaca Region in April 2014. An estimated 150 fishing vessels were destroyed after the April 1 earthquake, affecting more than 1,000 fishermen.

    CDA Honors Professor for Work on Ultaconductive Copper
    Professor Taysir Nayfeh, of Cleveland State University, received the Copper Development Association's (CDA) “Trailblazer in Copper Technology” award for his research in ultraconductive copper--a technology that could revolutionize how copper is used in a range of applications. Nayfeh has led an International Copper Association (ICA)-sponsored initiative to better understand ultraconductive copper and its potential commercial implications.
